PSHE / RSHE
PSHE including RSHE
Statement of Intent
At St Georges Primary School we are committed to the education of the whole child through a broad and balanced curriculum. This includes the teaching of RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) and PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) at a level which is appropriate to the age and stage of development of our children.
Our intention is that when children leave St George’s, they will do so with the knowledge, understanding, skills and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and resilience to flourish in an ever-changing-world. We want our children to be able to keep themselves and others around them safe, healthy and happy.
We believe that the teaching about human love and relationships must have the teachings of Jesus at its core and promote Catholic virtues as well as equipping all children with the clear and scientific information they need to maintain successful and happy relationships and healthy minds and bodies.
Implementation
The curriculum for PSHE and RSHE has been designed with the current cohorts of children in mind and is adapted and changed to further meet their needs as matters arise.
Our PSHE and RSHE objectives are woven through our cross curricular approach to learning including Come and see -RE, Journey in Love -RSE as well as science, PE and One Decision – PSHE.
Our main PSHE curriculum centres around the One Decision scheme and all year groups record their learning in their One Decision work books. This scheme gives the children the opportunity to make choices and see the consequences of these choices. This curriculum is further enhanced by having special themed days, holding celebrations and inviting in visitors to bring the children’s learning to life.
Our RSHE curriculum builds upon the prior experiences of our children and their curiosity about the world around them. Through our RSHE curriculum (Journey in Love), we want our children to develop the skills to make and maintain positive relationships with others. Additionally, we want them to learn and appreciate the wonder of human growth, change and reproduction. We aim to develop in our children high self-esteem and instil respect for themselves and others. Underpinning our curriculum is the knowledge of God’s great love for us and our own uniqueness.
Impact
The impact of our curriculum will be that the standards of attainment across the school will meet or exceed those which are expected of our children nationally as we will have developed children who are confident, resilient and who have a love of learning. We will have forged good relationships with our children and they in turn will know how to make and maintain their own relationships as they embark on the next stage of their life journey.
We continuously assess the implementation and impact of our RSHE curriculum in order to achieve the highest outcomes possible across all year groups and ensure we provide the support that is necessary for all children to have a good understanding of the complexities of relationships and sexual matters and a secure knowledge and skills base to navigate their way through these, now and in the future. Through our RSHE and PSHE curriculum, we believe we can enhance children’s education and help them to become confident individuals who have positive body awareness, an in-depth knowledge of how to keep themselves safe and healthy and who will, through respect, tolerance and understanding, forge and maintain positive relationships with a diverse range of family and friendship groups.
